The holidays are over, but there's one winter tradition left. CES is back, once again turning Las Vegas into a haven for the tech-obsessed. Samsung is holding its annual CES press conference on January 8 at 2PM PT / 5PM ET, a day before exhibitions officially open. Samsung is, of course, a big company with its hands in just about every cookie jar, so you may wonder what the press conference will focus on.

Need more convincing that it will soon be impossible to tell whether a video of a person is real or fake? Enter Samsung's new research, in which a neural network can turn a still image into a disturbingly convincing video. Researchers at the Samsung AI center in Moscow have achieved this, Motherboard reported Thursday, by training a "deep convolutional network" on a large number of videos showing talking heads, allowing it to identify certain facial features, and then using that knowledge to animate an image. The results, presented in a paper called "Few-Shot Adversarial Learning of Realistic Neural Talking Head Models," are not as good as some of the deepfake videos you've seen, but to create those, you need a large number of images of the person you're trying to animate. The advantage of Samsung's approach is that you can turn a single still image (though the fidelity of the resulting video increases with more images) into a video.

This year at CES Samsung celebrated 50 years in the electronics business, and seemed intent on blowing things out with a combination of smart home products, AI and 5G. Besides taking a victory lap over its advances in next-gen wireless, the company showed off how AI and machine learning could touch nearly all of the many products it makes. Everything from washing machines to its Smart Hub refrigerator, or a connected car has had a touch of Bixby AI applied, and it plans to do more with the technology going forward. Samsung also highlighted its deal with Apple snagging an iTunes Movies and TV app for its TVs, along with AirPlay 2 support. The company said sales of TVs over 75-inches are exploding, and that's part of the reason why it introduced a massive 98-inch 8K set with HDMI 2.1 onboard, plus new expansions of its Wall TV that can reach sizes of 219-inches.
